The first settlement of the North-West of Western Australia was recorded in a document written by Pietro Ferrara, a member of John Withnell's pioneering party. Written in Italian, dated 26 June 1864, the document was addressed to Father Martinez of the New Norcia Mission.

Diaries of Abbot F. Torres (from his own notes translated by Father Eugene Perez) which record his journeys from Italy to the Phillipines and return, and his journeys from Europe to Australia. Paper entitled "Pastoral settlement of the North-West" by Dom William, O.S.B., based on a letter written by Pietro Ferraro, which describes the pioneering efforts of John Withnell, Walter Padbury and John Wellard in the early settlement of the North-West of W.A., together with "New light on first North-West settlement" by an unknown author.
