Manuscript account by T. Pierre Rolland of the voyage of the Coquille. The account relates the circumnavigation of the Coquille, which left Toulon on 1822 Aug. 11, calling at Gibraltar, the Falklands, Chile, Peru, Tahiti, Sydney, Mauritius and St Helena, returning to Marseilles on 1825 Apr. 24. Rolland mentions the discovery of and naming of islands including Clermont-Tonnerre, Freycinet and Lostanges. He describes the customs, costumes, etc., of the native inhabitants of the places visited. Some of the locations described include Tahiti, the Falklands, Lima and Port Jackson. There is a strong social and anthropological content in the account. |
