| Description from source |
Original cloth-backed marbled papered boards (heavily worn and almost detached), loose pages, worn spine. Exercise book entirely filled with manuscript in ink, comprising dictation, written expression and formal letter writing exercises, bilingual vocabulary lists, pieces of religious instruction, and the lyrics to a number of uplifting songs, with watercolour illustrations in the margins. The book was later used by Albert's young sister, Caroline, and contains numerous exercises in her hand written at the Bethanien (Bethany) Lutheran School in 1897, with corrections and comments by the schoolteacher in red. This artefact opens a window onto the world of young German children growing up in Lutheran Barossa Valley communities in the late nineteenth century. |
