Description from source	Black and white photograph of Maria Erdelyi (anglicized to Erdely) who is on route to Australia from Hungary in 1939 via Canada. She is standing with two unidentified men in front of the Canadian Pacific train on route from Quebec to Vancouver. She left Hungary with her husband Gyuri Erdelyi (George Erdely) and arrived by ship, the Aorangi (Canadian Austral-Asian line Ltd) from Vancouver on the 23 September 1939 in Sydney. The rear of the photograph has some names, possibly the men in the photograph and the word Canada. Maria Edelyi is the mother of the donor Anne Slade. George experienced quota restrictions on education of Jews in Hungary and completed his education in Switzerland. In the 1930’s he was working in Germany where he saw first hand the worsening political situation and decided to leave Europe for the furthest place, being Australia. To expedite the process he converted to Greek orthodox as there were quotas on Jews entering Australia.
